Liver cleanses work, and I have seen many clients turn their health around simply by flushing their livers. We all need to detox our livers because we are bombarded with toxins from our food, water, and air every day.
This is my updated liver flush protocol. I've condensed it to make it more effective. Since you only need five days, it easily fits into your weekly schedule.
I recommend doing a liver cleanse once or twice a year, depending on your lifestyle. Choose a week that is less busy so you can sleep a little extra and process any trapped emotions if needed.
Liver Cleanse Inspiration from Andreas Moritz
Andreas Moritz is a famous nutritionist who wrote a book about how to do a liver flush. I have used his system as a foundation to inspire my liver flush protocol over the last 20 years.
Why Do You Need To Flush Your Liver?
Just like you regularly clean your home, and your physical body needs a regular cleanse. Regardless of where you live, we all need to cleanse our liver at least once a year to stay in optimum health.
Detoxifying your liver can be achieved in as little as five days through a combination of dietary changes, hydration, supplements, and lifestyle practices.
Cleansing your liver is essential, as it has several vital functions that keep you well, help heal, and prevent disease. The functions the liver performs include:
- Cleanses your blood to reduce infections and pathogens, supporting a healthy immune system.
- It creates ketones to help produce energy at a cellular level and helps with blood clotting.
- The liver supports the thyroid by converting thyroxine (T4) into triiodothyronine (T3).
- It assists in the utilisation of amino acids in the body.
- It produces bile and works with the gallbladder to help the body digest fats and improve digestion.
- Aids in fat burning and a healthy metabolism
- Essential for the metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates
- Converts toxins we're exposed to from the things we eat, drink, breathe, or put on our skin so our body can expel them through sweat, urine, and stools.
- The liver removes toxins that can contribute to skin issues such as acne, eczema, and rashes. By detoxifying the liver, individuals often notice clearer, healthier skin.
- The liver is involved in hormone metabolism. Detoxifying the liver can help balance hormones, reducing symptoms associated with hormonal imbalances such as PMS, mood swings, and menopausal symptoms.
Removing toxins from the body can improve mental clarity, better focus, and an overall uplifted mood. For many, a liver detox helps reduce symptoms of brain fog and anxiety.
How To Do My Five-Day Liver Flush
We need to prepare the body for your liver and gallbladder flush to soften the gallstones and reduce the toxic load in the gallbladder, allowing the stones to easily travel through the bile ducts and pass without causing pain and horrible side effects.
This preparation process may also cause bloating as you start to cleanse the colon, but this is normal, and such symptoms clear in a few days once the flush is complete.
Phase 1: Liver Flush Preparation (Day 1-4)
Daily Apple and Green JuiceFor four days prior to the flush, drink one litre of green apple juice and super greens daily. The malic acid in apple juice will soften gallstones, making them easier to pass. I like to mix 250ml water + 2 tsp of Rejuv super greens powder + 250ml fresh green apple juice each morning on an empty stomach.
Dietary AdjustmentsEat a light, whole-food diet during the preparation phase. Avoid rich, fatty foods and processed foods made from animal products. Consume a pesca vegan diet (wild fish, fruits, salads, vegetables) or use organic chicken if you don't like fish or have allergies. Avoid gluten, dairy, meat, alcohol, and coffee.
Supplementation SupportUse Rejuv Liver Support Capsules to support your liver and Rejuv Digestive Complex Powder to help your colon so you can poop out the toxins. For the most effective flush, use our Liver Flush Essentials Pack to support all essential pathways and enjoy 20% off this bundle while stocks last. You will likely see little green gallstones (like green peas) in your stool.
Phase 2: Liver Flush Day (Day 4)
- Breakfast and Lunch: Apple and green juice are normal, and you should eat light, fat-free meals. Avoid eating or drinking after 2 PM.
- At 6 PM: Drink a mixture of 1 tablespoon of Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) dissolved in 3/4 cup of water.
- At 8 PM: Drink another serving of the Epsom salt mixture.
- At 10 PM: Mix 1/2 cup of extra virgin olive oil and 3/4 cup of freshly squeezed lemon and grapefruit juice. Shake well and drink it all. Immediately lie down and stay still for at least 30 minutes. It's recommended to lie on your right side with your knees pulled up.
Phase 3: The Following Morning (Day 5)
- At 6 AM: Drink a third dose of the Epsom salt mixture.
- At 8 AM: Drink the fourth and final dose of the Epsom salt mixture.
Phase 4: Post-Flush (Day 6 Onwards)
Gradual Reintroduction of Food: Start with light foods such as fresh veggie juice and soup and gradually move to solid foods like vegetables, clean organic protein, and a good fast.
Avoid heavy and fatty meals for a week. If you need more support, our liver flush essential pack comes with a full diet and wellness plan with recipes to support this process.
The Fastest Ways To Repair Your Liver
- Eliminate toxins from your diet: Completely abstain from alcohol to give your liver a chance to heal. Avoid coffee; swap it out for strong matcha or green tea over these five days if you need that extra kick.
- Adopt a Liver-Friendly Diet: Focus on a nutrient-dense diet that includes plenty of vegetables, low GI fruits, EFAs, and lean proteins such as small wild fish, for they are easy to digest.
- Increase Antioxidant Intake: Foods rich in antioxidants, such as berries, nuts, and leafy greens, can help reduce oxidative stress on the liver. You can read more about this in my blog, Love Your Liver Boost Your Metabolism, Lose Fat.
- Optimise Your Supplements for Liver Repair: To flush your liver effectively, you need to add supplements to support your body's ability to function, which can flush toxins out of your liver, gallbladder, and colon. My favourites are Burdock Root, Parsley, Licorice Root, Milk Thistle, Turmeric, Ginger Root, Cayenne, NAC, Choline, Glutathione, Dande Root, Garlic, and Nettle. Most of these are ingredients in our Rejuv Liver Support Capsules.
- Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration supports the liver's ability to flush out toxins, and you need to help hydrate at a cellular level, so be sure to drink 2L of our Rejuv wellness water a day.
- Regular Exercise: Enhances overall health and supports liver function by improving circulation and reducing fat accumulation.
- Self-care: Skin Brushing, Epsom salt baths, Sweating in FIR saunas (I love Therasage), Home liver massage, and a Castor oil pack on your liver are all wonderful ways to love your liver.
- Choose Drinks That Support Your Liver Flush: Add liver-cleansing teas such as nettle, dandelion, turmeric, lemon, ginger, Apple Cider Vinegar (see my blog), and milk thistle.
- Support All Your Detox Pathways: The most effective way to flush your liver is to make sure ALL your detox pathways are supported, including your liver, gallbladder, kidneys, and colon, are working so you don't mobilise toxins and then re-absorb them because you are too toxic. I learnt this the hard way about 20 years ago in London and went into this flush unprepared and ended up with a rash all over my face and body. This happens because your skin is the most accessible place to dump toxins if your liver and kidneys can't handle the load.
- Mindfulness: A liver detox can bring up trapped emotions such as anger. For more on this topic, please read my blog on detoxing your emotions.
